Free Language Tutorials: Basic Phrases, Vocabulary and Grammar in 9 Languages:

All of the language tutorials on this site are completely free - there is no premium content to buy. I believe education should be free, so this site will always remain free.

Currently, 9 languages are available: English, Russian, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Dutch and Swedish. Recently, I've begun a project to convert the Foreign Service Institute language programs to HTML format. Lists of vocabulary and verb conjugations are available for some Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages, as well as other helpful ideas, resources and links for learning foreign languages.

French is my fourth language, so it is the most extensive language tutorial on this site. You can work through the tutorials lesson by lesson or you can jump to any lesson you'd like by using the index below. French VII is more designed for those who are moving to or living in France so the vocabulary is culture-specific, while the Informal & Slang tutorial intends to teach the real spoken form of the language instead of the grammatically correct and formal language always found in textbooks.

Book Recommendations. Language textbooks are rather expensive and generally only include the formal, written language. You will need more exposure to the real spoken language if you want to be become fluent. In addition to the Champs Elysees audio program, as well as a good dictionary, grammar review, and book of verb conjugations, I have used the following books and materials for learning French:
